Vehicle safety recalls are an important part of highway transportation safety and are designed to be a proactive way of addressing possible safety issues before they can cause any dangerous situations.
According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Daimler Trucks of North America recently announced two separate recalls which they say will affect more than 4,000 trucks.
The recall is concerning some caliper mounting bolts that may not have been sufficiently tightened during manufacturing. The bolt problem involves approximately 4,155 vehicles. Left unchecked, these loose caliper bolts can reduce the effectiveness of brakes.
Truck models included in this most recent recall include:
- 2018-2019 Freightliner 108SD
- 2018-2019 Freightliner 114SD
- 2018-2019 Freightliner 122SD
- 2018-2019 Freightliner Business Class M2
- 2018-2019 Freightliner Cascadia
- 2018-2019 Freightliner Columbia
- 2018-2019 Freightliner Coronado
Even though 4,155 trucks have been recalled, only 1 percent of those trucks are estimated to have the defect.
Notifications of the recall will be going out to owners soon as Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is expected to begin notifying owners on Oct. 6, and dealers will check and tighten brake caliper mounting bolts for free. IF you are an affected truck owner, you can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-457-0712 and then refer to the recall number FL-783. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is using the recall number 18V-525.
The other recent recall will affect approximately 116 model year 2018-2019 Freightliner Cascadia tractors. This recall concerns pitman arms that may crack or fracture over time. Failure of a pitman arm would cause loss of steering control which can be a serious problem.
As with the other recall, DTNA will also begin to notify truck owners on Oct 6. Dealers will replace the pitman arms free of charge. For this recall, truck owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-457-0712 and refer to recall number FL-784. The NHTSA’s recalls number in this case is 18V-522.
